Western Australia’s premier surfing event The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro could lose it’s top flight status next year without a breakthrough in negotiations with World Surf League global administrators.

With the event due to get underway next week, Surfing / Western Australia and key supporter Tourism / Western Australia are trying to keep the event on the World Championship Tour once the contract expires this year.

The five year multi – million dollar contract was signed in 2012 and has seen The Margaret River contest elevated to surfing championship tour status for the women’s draw since 2013 and the men’s since 2014.

It is possible The World Surf League could trim the number of events showcased on the Australian leg of the tour from three events to two, that would represent the Margaret River event could become a casualty. The other Australian championship tour events are The Quicksilver / Roxy Pro which is held on the Gold Coast in Queensland and The Rip Curl Pro – Bells Easter Classic, which is held at Bells Beach in Victoria and have long been a part of the world surfing championship tour schedule.

Surfing Western Australia have designed a unique contest event so it has multiple venues based on wind and swell conditions and financially there has been great support in the past with The Department Of Tourism Of Western Australia and other sponsors. So in terms of being financially afloat The Margaret River Pro is very strong.

Whatever the outcome is, if this is to be the last World Surf League event held in Western Australia and you have some spare time and money to spend, then drop in to Margaret River and check out all of the world championship tour surf action.
