Stephanie Gilmour has approved of the artificial waves at The Kelly Slater designed surf arena in Lemoore, California, USA after Australia finished in fourth place at the inaugural World Surf League Teams Event.
The Australian team was captained by Women’s World Champion Surfer – Gilmour and included an elite line up of World Championship Tour surfers which included Mick Fanning, Tyler Wright, Joel Parkinson and Matt Wilkinson. But the Australian team failed to qualify for The Founders Cup final.
The World Team went on to beat Brazil in the decider to win the title at the five team event held at the revolutionary facility 160 km from the Pacific Ocean.
Gilmour welcomed the concept, particularly as in a way to break up The World Surf League global tour’s calendar. It was an incredible event and even though it was disappointing to not make the final, it was cool to be here and to see how it all works, she said. To see the fans out here and how the team aspect comes into play was really positive. This opens the floodgates into a whole new realm of arenas and events in controlled conditions.
But as long as there is a good balance between specialty wave pool events and traditional surf events which are contested in the ocean. Then I think the two will compliment each other really well.
