Mick Fanning’s free and easy attitude as he heads into retirement has put him in the path to a dream final at The Rip Curl Pro held at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia.
The former 3 times World Champion yesterday progressed to a quarterfinal against fellow Australian Owen Wright. Fanning is the only surfer in the final eight who has rung the famous Rip Curl Pro championship bell and his prospects surged when last years winner Jordy Smith from South Africa and 2016 Rip Curl Pro winner Matt Wilkinson of Australia was eliminated.
Fanning has not won an event on the world tour since the 2016 J – Bay Open in South Africa.
Current 2017 World Champion John John Florence from Hawaii and current World Surf League 2018 tour leader Julian Wilson of Australia were also knocked out of the event. Florence was convincingly upset by fellow Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau, who hassled him into making mistakes during their heat.
Stephanie Gilmour is Australia’s last hope in the Rip Curl Pro Women’s event and faces a semi final against Caroline Marks after beating Sage Erickson of the USA in their quarter final. The other semi final pits Silvana Lima of Brazil against Tatiana Weston Webb from Hawaii.
The forecast looks good for the final day of the Rip Curl Pro Men’s and Women’s championship tour event at Bells Beach tomorrow, with a predicted swell forecast that should assist all surfers competing in what should be an exciting day of surfing.
