The 2018 World Junior Surfing Championships started at Bombo Beach in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia today. The action packed opening day of competition saw the World’s best junior surfers, compete in clean 2 – 3 ft waves.
Men’s junior competitor Samuel Pupo from Brazil, remained busy during his opening Men’s Round 1 heat and posted consistent scores to give him the upper hand and post a heat win over Ryland Ruben’s from the USA and Marco Mignot of France who finished second and third respectively. Pupo cemented his position and will now advance straight into Round 3.
Current Women’s World Junior Champion Macy Callaghan from Australia, returned to Bombo Beach on Day 1 and posted an impressive heat total of 17.80 out of a possible 20 points, displaying an electric performance of backhand surfing. Callaghan dominated her opponents Shino Matsuda of Japan and Ellie Turner from Great Britian. Both Matsuda and Turner will surf off in Round 2 while Callaghan will progress into Round 3 and hope to continue her good fortune as she tries to defend her 2017 Women’s Junior World Title Championship Crown.
The 2018 World Surf League Jeep World Junior Championships will be held in the Kiama region on the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia from January 4 th, 2018 – January 12 th, 2018.
