Gabriel Medina, Brazil has won the Meo Rip Curl Pro – Portugal, by defeating Julian Wilson of Australia at stop number 10 on the World Surf League Championship Tour. The event culminated in good three – five foot beach break waves at Supertubos with Medina’s victory the eighth event title of his career, only 10 days since his last victory at The Quicksilver Pro France.
Coming into the European leg of the tour ranked eighth on The Jeep Leaderboard the former 2014 World Surf League Champion rocketed to second position with his back to back wins in Hossegor, France and Peniche, Portugal. Medina will be a legitimate threat to John John Florence’s World Surf League Title ambitions when the tour concludes in Hawaii in December. If Florence fails to advance to the final at Pipe, Medina could clinch his second World Surf League title with a win there.
In the final, Medina capitalised on average waves to build his scoreline and apply pressure to Wilson earlier. The Brazilian caught and surfed an incredible fourteen waves and kept searching the line up looking to improve his heat total, while Wilson stayed slightly more patient. The Australian turned the heat with a good backhand barrel with five minutes on the clock, but Medina stayed active and posted two new scores to finally claim the event title in Peniche.
