Grant twiggy Baker leads the 2016 / 2017 World Surf League big wave tour rankings heading into the second half of the season. Now with the closing of the southern hemisphere window the Big Wave Tour is set to resume on October 15th, 2016 for the northern hemisphere leg of the tour which runs to February 28th, 2017.
The first half of the tour this year witnessed intense action at the Puerto Escondido Challenge at the Mexican pipeline in monstrous 35 foot surf at the exceptionally powerful beachbreak. This event pushed the top big wave surfers to their limits.
The second half of the prestigious Big Wave Tour will witness the worlds best big wave surfers take on three infamous breaks, the Pe’ahi Challenge in Maui, Hawaii and the Todos Santos Challenge in Baja, Mexico. In addition, the northern hemisphere season will see the debut of the Nazare Challenge in Portugal. Each event will see 24 of the best big wave surfers battle for $100,000 in prize money and win a commemorative watch from Big Wave Tour sponsor Tag Huer.
