Announcement – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil – August 3rd, 2016.
The International Olympic committee – IOC has announced that it has included surfing as a gold medal sport in the sports programme for the Tokyo 2020 summer Olympic Games to be held in Japan. This is a huge moment for professional surfing and further highlights surfing’s rise as a global participatory and spectator sports. As home to the worlds best surfing the World Surf League looks forward to working with the ISA to ensure that the sport is showcased in the best possible manner and with the world’s best athletes.
It is incredible that our awesome athletes will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills to the global Olympic audience and compete for their countries.
It will also be interesting to see if the Olympic committee ask the World Surf League in the future about the possibility of holding the surfing event at a quality wave pool in Japan, with other action sports that are being represented at the Olympics arena eg skateboarding and bmx. This would be of huge interest to Japanese and International spectators who are attending the games and to television viewers from around the globe.
It would represent the biggest action sports festival in the world.
Stay tuned for further updates in the future …
